Review
"Rwanda is excellent; it captures the mood of the place and gives a positive and accurate account of a fantastic country." - Art of Travel"Every now and again you come across a guidebook which goes far above and beyond the humdrum list of exchange rates, visa requirements and one-line descriptions of sights and amenities. This guide is just such a book. It gives the prospective visitor real and detailed insights into the country, its people, history, flora and fauna. Even if you end up never going to Rwanda, you will feel you know the place quite intimately by the time you get to the final page." - Wildside"At last, a well-written and dedicated guide to Rwanda." - Footprints"Rwanda is an excellent book that I have recommended to all the visitors who come to Rwanda and who want to know more than just the superficial accounts from the press. This guide presents a clear and balanced overview of events in Rwanda's recent past, considered by many Rwandans to be one of the fairest representations. The book also describes the charm and attraction that make this country so different." - Dr Annette Lanjouw, Director of the International Gorilla Conservation Programme

Bradt guides are generally reliable, but this one gets some details wrong that can confuse the traveller. Briggs and Booth do a good job of hitting all the major tourist and historical sites, but he tends to underestimate costs and travel times. These could have changed since 2007, but other facts are omitted that haven't changed. For example, you MUST be at the Chimp trekking spot in Nyungwe National Park by 6:00 a.m. to go on the trek (we missed out). The turn-off from Gisenyi to Kibuye is almost 10 km from town(the book says 5), and the directions to the Murambi Genocide site are inadequate. Travellers would probably appreciate a bit more detail about what a grisly site this is.Gorilla trekking gets plenty of attention, well deserved -- except that tour operators have bought up almost all of the permits months in advance.Briggs and Booth treat Rwanda's genocide with sensitivity and insght, but it sometimes creeps over into a sort of clientilism for the current government. These are small imperfections, and the Bradt guide is probably the best thing available for taking advantage of Rwanda's growing tourist sector. One hopes that the next edition will correct the minor glitches.
I visited Rwanda in November 2012 for a month during my clinical rotation. I brought the 4th edition with me and found it a bit outdated. All sectors of the country are rapidly evolving and so many developments have been taking place since the last edition was published. Luckily I had a privilege to get in touch with the author and was able to review the latest edition (5th). The newest edition successfully overcame the weaknesses that the previous edition had: All the maps have been updated with information about the locations of important business, hotels, restaurants, public facilities and transportations, etc. I found that the reviews on hotels and restaurants were fair and accurate. I enjoyed reading the beautifully written essays included in the book. This book covers what we should never miss to better understand the country such as the memorials in Nyamata or Ntarama. I highly recommend this guidebook to anyone visiting the country. A truly great resource. I will be coming back to the country this summer with it. Thank you, Mr. Briggs!
If you are traveling to Rwanda for business or pleasure I definitely recommend this book one of the few travel guides written on Rwanda it does a good job of introducing you to the country, some must sees, and some key Kinyarwanda words to get you around.Don't pay attention to the information about pickpockets and some unsafe areas in Kigali. Rwanda is probably the safest place I have ever been.Good luck on your travels. Rwanda is an amazing place and I cannot wait to get back there.
I have not visited Rwanda yet, but since it is quite difficult to find information about traveling in Rwanda on internet this book is definitely worth having with you. There is a long and good written introduction to the country’s history which I think is essential to know before you visit this country. I would like to find more budget options but this seems to be a general problem in Rwanda (as I said I have not been there yet, maybe there are many just hard to find on internet). I would also like to have more information how to arrange trips by myself. To sum up, the book is very good written and the most necessary information is available but just to go to Rwanda and rely on only this book seams risky (which you can do with a lonely planet book in south east Asia as well as India).
this purchase was for my daughter who is taking a trip to Rwanda to volunteer 3 months in an orphanage. I wanted her to have the most current updated information on the country. Upon her receiving this book, she has been quite impressed with all the great information for the traveler who is going and staying like she is, or just for that person who is putting Rwanda on their stop. It's quite informative for your shots, where to stay, what activities to participate and journeys to take.Rwanda, 4th (Bradt Travel Guide Rwanda)
It was a great book and my daughter used when in Rwanda.
This book was the beginning of our research prior to a visit with the Mountain Gorillas in Rwanda. We learned a lot but realize that the book is 13 years old. I'm sure that there are many changes but for a relatively dated book, it was very helpful.
Very great and informational for anyone traveling to Rwanda! Brandt is an authority on travel books and they did well with this one.
