Rabbi Dr. Bejarano Gutierrez meticulous examination of the sources addresses important issues overlooked by religious enthusiasts who struggle think critically about their faith. A must read for serious students of the Bible, Jewish history and Christian origins.
I consider myself an amateur but serious student of judeo-christianity. Raised in the Christian faith, I began in adulthood to question how in the world the Gospels, written so many years after the death of Christ and in a language not even spoken by the Jewish rabbi Jesus and his Jewish disciples could be an accurate representation of Christ's mission. In particular, I am passionate to understand the early beginnings of Christianity, its split with Judaism and the rise of antisemitism, and I was so hopeful to learn more. UNFORTUNATELY, not from this book. I doggedly read to the end, wondering where the book's editor was hiding out. I too often thought my e-reader was duplicating pages only to realize that the repetitions were real. In many passages, the grammar was so poor that I could not tease out what the author really meant to convey. I began to wonder if the book was originally written in another language and this was just an incredibly poor English translation. In the end I believe that the author's scholarship may be impeccable and his intent is sincere, but the product was just too flawed to advance my learning. Don't waste your time on this book. Find another instead. Oh, and Mr Publisher, Get an editor!!!
If you are interested in the first temple period and/or the ties between Judaism and early Christianity, then this book is a great resource. Sources are always quoted and footnoted. The author has obviously done a vast amount of research in this area, as shown in this book and several others.
This book is a great resource for anyone who's interested in the historical contextual landscape that birthed the Jesus movement. There aren't many resources that I'm aware of that deal with the subject matter from an academic and religiously netural point of view that alone makes this book a valuable and unique resource.
