Review
"Jackson tells delightful little stories through this unusual natural history guide. This is unusual because it's so uplifting. The Galápagos Islands are a place of wonder, with such rich, abundant wildlife and natural history that readers will yearn to experience them first-hand and not just through a book. But this guide will do for a start. [Here] is the kind of book that belongs in every nature lover's library." -- Margaret Mironiwicz, The Globe and Mail "The book is more than a simple guide, it contains information gleaned from the extensive literature existing on the Galápagos Islands, combining it with first-hand experience of the author, who worked in the archipelago as a naturalist guide and as a zoologist." -- Marinus Hoogmoed

I feel that this book will be an excellent preparation for an upcoming visit. The keyed list of the Islands' plants an animals should be particularly useful. More, higher quality color photos would be welcome additions, though.
All trips to the Galapagos are with trained guides, and if you are lucky you'll go with one of the really experienced ones. No matter who you are with, this is a great book to look through before going and to take with you. The text reinforces the amazing stories you'll hear about the landscapes, plants and animals you'll see and the photos and other illustrations are good. The checklist in the back of the book is fun to use as well. The other books I enjoyed were Terrestrial Life of Galapagos and Marine Life of Galapagos (available in Ecuador/at the National Park store in Puerto Ayora) and The Beak of the Finch. The wildlife of the Galapagos book wasn't used.
Not useful. Page 15 (I.e. really early into the book) is a detailed scientific map of the tectonic situation. There are no discernible references on the map to tell you where things are. It could be China or Alaska. Who knows? Turn the page and there’s a 3rd grade drawing of how volcanic islands form. This book has a lot of detail without any overall context. We’re scheduled to visit this summer and were hoping for a good, general, natural history. This book has a lot of details without a good overview.
This is the best single vade mecum for a trip to the Galapagos. It provides a geographic, historical, scientific overview, along with chapter-by-chapter descriptions of plant and animal life. It includes some excellent illustrations, though it is not a substitute for a field guide. On the other hand, a field guide does not provide the clear, concise ethological descriptions found in this book. The book also includes some helpful charts on species origins, adaptive radiations, and species distributions, among other things, and has some lovely photos (though for Galapagos photography, the work of Tui de Roy is the gold standard and a must).Jackson was my first book on the Galapagos (aside from the chapter in Voyage of the Beagle) and it led me into a sense of wonder, gratitude, and responsibility for a unique place that our species must work hard to deserve and preserve, given how we have treated it in the past.
interesting..helpfuli read this before and after i went to the galapagos
Used it on a 9 day trip to the Galapagos and loved being able to read about the animals and plants we were seeing. Well written and very readable for the lay audience. It's older, so some information is out of date.
Great pictures--helpful information
Book is written with a lot of technical scientific detail, which I expected and liked. Big complaint though is very few of the pictures were in color, which is kind of important when identifying flora and fauna.
